2009 Sydney Morning Herald Plain English Speaking Award

Tim Matthews (winner) of the 2009 Sydney Morning Herald Plain English Speaking AwardCongratulations to Tim Matthews of Caringbah High School, winner of the 2009 New South Wales State Final of the Sydney Morning Herald Plain English Speaking Award. Tim then competed at the National Final in Melbourne and was one of two students selected to represent Australia at the International Final, to be held in London next year.

The Plain English Speaking Award was first organised in Victoria in 1977. Since then, it has become a national award with the Australia-Britain Society and Education Departments cooperating in each state.  The award is open to senior students of government and non-government schools throughout each state.  The first National Final was held in 1978.

The National winner and runner-up now compete in an International Final held in England by the English Speaking Union. In 1982 and 1983, the International Finals were won by our State winners, Peter Hartcher and Warren Lee respectively.
