PUBLIC SPEAKING

 

Public Speaking provides an opportunity for all students to gain confidence and to communicate their ideas effectively to a wider audience.

 

It involves:

  • the ability to speak clearly and fluently
  • the ability to maintain audience interest
  • the ability to develop a sense of authority and confidence

 

Public Speaking

  • builds confidence and self respect
  • teaches logical thinking and ordering of thoughts
  • teaches students to integrate ideas and concepts
  • teaches effective communication skills and the use of voice

 

Entries for all public speaking competitions close on Friday 27 March 2010.

 

Four competitions are available.

  • The Sydney Morning Herald Plain English Speaking Award, for students aged 15-18 in government and non-government schools.
  • The Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award, for students aged 12-14 in government and non-government schools.
  • The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition for Years 5 and 6 students in government schools.
  • The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition for Years 3 and 4 students in government schools.

 

The Plain English Speaking Award has been offered to NSW schools since 1978. It feeds into a national and international competition.

 

The Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award has been running since 1995. It feeds into a national competition

 

The two age divisions of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition are joint initiatives of the Multicultural Programs Unit and The Arts Unit, NSW Department of Education and Training. Commencing in 1996, these competitions are designed to encourage NSW primary school students to practice their speaking skills and improve their understanding of multiculturalism.
