NSW Department of Education and Training: The Arts Unit

How It Happens

"We Scream" (Georgia Turner, St Ives High School)Each school that wishes to participate in Operation Art may submit up to four works of art. You might like to consider holding a competition within your school to select the best student works. Art works and associated application material must be lodged at The Arts Unit by the published closing date.

All submitted works will then be professionally framed and exhibited at the Penrith Regional Art Gallery with works being hung according to the categories of Subject Matter outlined in the K-6 and 7-10 syllabuses for Visual Arts. These categories include People, Other Living Things, Events, Objects, and Places and Spaces.

Students, parents, principals and teachers will be invited to attend the official opening function before the exhibition is opened to the public.

50 works will then be selected to become part of the permanent art collection of The Children's Hospital at Westmead. These selected works will also be exhibited at the Art Gallery of NSW in December and tour regional art galleries across NSW the following year.

"The Crab": (Amelia Sawyer, Narellan Vale Public School)An additional 25 works will also be selected for Operation ArtBank. These will be presented to the children's ward of a country hospital.

A further three sets of 12 works each, will also be selected to hang in the offices of the NSW Commission for Children and Young People in Sydney, the NSW Office of the Children's Guardian in Parramatta and Bear Cottage at Manly. All of these works will later become part of Operation ArtBank for presentation to country hospitals.

Schools will receive a framed colour copy of those artworks selected for special exhibition or inclusion in the permanent collection.

Artworks not selected for any of the above special exhibitions may be considered for other visual arts projects such as the Nagoya-Sydney Sister City Art Exchange.

All students will be awarded special Congratulatory Certificates.

In Term 4, all framed artworks and/or officially framed copies will be returned to the student’s school.
