Printmaking

"Untitled" (Leila Bousleiman, Hampden Park Public School)Processes for works in this category could include:

  • monoprinting: drawing or painting directly onto glass, perspex, desk etc. using a sticky ink or paint. The image is then pressed onto paper. No two images are alike.
  • relief printing: printmaking process in which part of the surface is removed and the remaining surface is inked and printed eg. lino printing, block printing, vegetable printing, styrofoam printing etc.
  • chincolle: printing over a pre-existing image, collage or drawing etc.
  • etching: incising a surface such as a metal plate, plastic sheet or plastic coated card. When printed the incised lines retain the ink and produce an image under the pressure of an etching press.
  • collograph: building up a surface by using materials such as corrugated cardboard, string, tissue paper, found objects etc. The textured surface is then printed.
  • serigraphy: printing through a silk screen with a stencil attached.

Why not consider:

  • printing on different types of paper, fabric or plastic.
  • creating monochromatic (one-colour) prints or rainbow prints.
  • hand colouring the final prints.
  • combining printmaking with other forms to create a mixed media work.

There are also hundreds of examples of student works and lessons available on the Teaching Resources CD available through The Arts Unit. For a more "hands-on" approach, why not look at attending one of the Operation Art Workshops which are held in many locations across New South Wales.
