NSW Department of Education and Training: The Arts Unit

Workshops

Operation Art is not just about exhibitions and appreciation. To help students and teachers in the creation of works, Operation Art also presents a series of workshops in regional and metropolitan centres held in conjunction with your local Operation Art Exhibition.

Students and teachers will spend a whole day making, creating and learning. Covering three different topic areas, Workshops run from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. All you need to bring is a paint shirt to protect your clothing - all other equipment and materials are supplied.

Examples of Workshop topics for Years 3 - 4 include:

  • Perfect Printmaking - Discover the properties of perfect printmaking through the creation of either a textured template or collograph or scratch into foamboard and find a fabulous vista to view. Print your artwork onto a textured background. Chincolle!
  • Drawing & Colour - Creative artmaking at its best! Rub back into black and white charcoal to allow the person inside to emerge. Layers of interest are added with a wash or through etching a brightly coloured patterned background that pushes that person into the foreground to become the star. Complete the composition with collage or contrasts of texture.
  • A Paper Clay Performance - Discover the unique qualities of paper clay through manipulating and moulding to create a whimsical, wide eyed, star gazing clay creature.

Examples of Workshop topics for Years 5 to 8 include:

  • Digital Demons - Imagine if you could lie on the bottom of a river and watch the flotsam flowing over you. Use a scanner and computer to reproduce this vision of calmness.
  • Outside The Square - Use a variety of mixed media (pencil, aquarelles, chalk pastels, charcoal, oil crayons, ink and collage) to create an artwork that allows the artist to go outside the square. Add interest by incorporating the matt frame into the artwork.
  • Sensational Sculpture With Wire - Explore and contrast aspects of 2D and 3D by drawing with a variety of media before exploring the wonders of working with aluminium wire to weave a wondrous world of sensational sculptured insects.
