The William Wilkins Memorial Art Collection is a significant collection of more than 600 Higher School Certificate visual artworks from the 1970s until the current year. Each year The Arts Unit coordinates the purchase of works from ARTEXPRESS (the annual Exhibition of Higher School Certificate Visual Arts bodies of work) for the William Wilkins Memorial Collection. Works by significant young Australian artists such as Jasper Knight and Benitta Bob are included in the collection.
The works are exhibited in the William Wilkins Gallery, Department of Education and Training in Bridge Street and are also highly sought after to enhance the working environments of many government departments.
William Wilkins was the first head of the Department of Education in New South Wales. He arrived in Australia in 1851 and for the next 30 years was education’s leading figure, leaving an indelible legacy of vision and quality. In the early years of the new colony William Wilkins emphasised the value of drawing and visual arts in the education of New South Wales students. The collection was named in his honour in 1984.
The preferred method of hanging artworks from the William Wilkins collection is tracking and cables. Tracking allows greater flexibility in the type and number of artworks that can be supplied. If you do not have this facility we suggest that you arrange for tracking to be installed.
MOST exchanges of ARTWORKS will occur on FRIDAYS.
