2009 Combined High Schools Debating

 

Each year Combined High School (CHS) Debating Teams "firsts" and "seconds" are chosen to compete in a series of debates against the private school groupings GPS (Greater Public Schools), CAS (Combined Associated Schools) and the ART (Archdale Representative Teams).

The debates are hosted in alternate years by either government or non-government schools. Debates take place at night and "firsts" and "seconds" debates take place simultaneously.

Rules of Competition

• Competitors should be from Years 11 and 12 attending a government school.
• Teams are comprised of four members.
• Speakers are to speak for eight minutes with a warning bell at six minutes, two bells at eight minutes and a continuous bell at nine minutes.
• The topics will only be disclosed, and decided upon, immediately prior to preparation time.
• Teams should prepare their debates within a predetermined time limit of one hour.
• A win in the Firsts is to be awarded a score of three points, and a win in the Seconds is to be awarded a score of two points. No points are to be awarded for a loss. At competition’s end, each organisation will therefore have a score out of fifteen.

Stages Of Competition

• Students are nominated by coaches and adjudicators and selection trials take place Saturday 11 July (the first day of the mid-year school holidays) at The Arts Unit, corner of Toothill Steet and The Boulevarde, Lewisham.
• Those students selected participate in a series of coaching sessions.
• The three debates take place in Term 3.
• Firsts and Seconds debates are held simultaneously in the evening at a host school. Parents, friends and people interested in debating are encouraged to attend.

Prizes

The NSW Representative Debating Cup is awarded to the Champion organisation.  Medallions and CHS ties are awarded to team members of both the Firsts and the Seconds.
