NSW Department of Education and Training: The Arts Unit

2009 Premier's Debating Challenge

The NSW Department of Education & Training has been running Debating programs since the 1930s, when the Hume Barbour/English Speaking Union Debating Competition began for senior students in the Sydney Region. By the year 2000, debating had grown to include five separate competitions for school teams at primary and secondary levels from throughout the state.

In 2004, the Parents & Citizens Association founded the Premier's Debating Challenge to extend the opportunities available for young debaters. In 2005 the Premier's Debating Challenge was merged with the existing competitions run by The Arts Unit of the NSW Department of Education & Training. The competition is now open to government school students in Years 5-12.
