The 2010 Combined Recorder Ensemble will perform a diverse and engaging selection of music that will challenge and inspire students and teachers alike. The program will open with a beautiful and stirring arrangement of
Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring together with the grand concert organ. The second item is an arrangement of
Home and the Heartland, a beautiful Celtic melody in the tradition of
Riverdance. Concluding the concert will be the world premiere of a specially commissioned work,
Russian Doll. This haunting and evocative work, with a distinctive Russian feel, will conclude an evening of musical excellence.
Schools are invited to enter recorder players from Years 3 - 8. Schools new to the program are encouraged to apply; comprehensive support materials and professional learning workshops are available for any school that applies for inclusion.
Please note - because of concurrent rehearsals being held in different locations, individual students may only nominate for one combined instrumental ensemble (recorders or strings).
Two levels of recorder players will be catered for: Beginner Descant and Extension (consisting of descants, trebles and tenors with optional basses). Indicative ranges are as follows:
Although the level of musical difficulty varies from Beginner to Extension, the main differences lie in the degree of technical fluency required and the amount of repertoire to be learnt by students.
While all schools are encouraged to participate in the recorder program, generally, recorder players in their first year will not have reached a high enough standard to participate in the performance at the Sydney Opera House. As places are limited, please consider enrolling only your more senior students for Opera House performances.
The first of the three pieces for the 2010 Combined Recorders is now available for download using the links below.

Students are not the only ones who benefit from participation in the Festival of Instrumental Music. Teachers also have the opportunity for professional learning by attending the Combined Recorders Teachers' Workshop. By attending the Teachers' Workshop, New Scheme Teachers can be accredited at Professional Competence, contributing toward Teacher Identified Professional Development.
The workshop for teachers from all participating schools will be held on Wednesday 17 February 2010 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Macquarie Street, Sydney from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Attendance at this workshop is mandatory for all participating metropolitan teachers and strongly recommended for participating non-metropolitan teachers. Casual teacher relief is to be provided by the school.
The workshop will be led by Susan Sukkar, the conductor and director of the recorder program. Teaching kits, including rehearsal CDs and sheet music, will be distributed on the day.
